USB Port Not Working In GT Sound Active Speaker

The complaint of this local brand GT sound active speakers was no power in the USB unit while other function was working fine.

You can see the USB module in the photo below. Both sides the LEDs were lighted up but not the USB unit.

There were only three screws in order to open up the module and perform some voltage test.

The first test once the module is exposed is to check on the DC supply (5 volt) to the USB circuit.  5 volt is so important because without 5 volt many circuits would not be able to work.

It seems that the 5 volt was presence because the meter reads 4.9 volt which considered good. If it is less than 4.8 or 4.7 volt then you may need to track backward to see what’s wrong with the dc supply.

Since the 5 volt was there, this means I had to remove the whole module out from the system and check it off board. Just detach the few cables and the module will easily come out.

There were no broken tracks but the main Square IC was a a bit hot. I presumed it could have been shorted. Since I can’t get this single IC, thus I bought the whole module for replacement. As mentioned earlier, this is a local made product so getting the module for replacement is fast and easy and with reasonable price. These are the advantages of locally made electronics equipment.

Imagine if this product is made from other country, chances for me to buy the replacement module would be slim. Even if you can buy one I’m sure the price would be super high as you need to pay for the transport fees and it takes time too to ship to your place. Probably the customer don’t want to repair it since the price is high and got to wait for some time for the part to arrive.

I managed to get the part and fixed it. My guess was right because once all the cables were connected and powered On, the display came back-see the photo below.

Conclusion- If you troubleshoot any USB related circuit board, the first thing you need to check is to make sure the 5 volt is there. If no 5 volt then you have to trace backward till you found the cause of the missing 5 volt. If there is 5 volt, then make sure the circuit board tracks are good. If all the components checked to be good then just direct replace the square interface chip and retest.
